PetCentRX Vim & Vigor Formula

by Dr. Shawn Messonnier

The PetCentRX Vim & Vigor formula is our basic supplement for most healthy pets as well as sick pets. For many years I have recommended various vitamin/mineral supplements, but none contained everything I wanted in a perfect basic supplement. Mike Fantetti, president of the company which makes and distributes the Vim & Vigor formula, contacted me after reading my Holistic Pet column in his Arizona newspaper. He was interested in my thoughts on this product, and was looking for a veterinary spokesman for his company. While I would love to take credit for actually formulating the Vim & Vigor formula, I was not involved in the development of the supplement. However, I was so impressed with this product (and his company) that I agreed to sign on as spokesman. My 2 goals as spokesman are:

  1. Share the natural health message with pet owners around the world, teaching them how to care for their pets while saying" NO" to drugs when possible,
  2. Provide the very best supplements for my own patients at Paws & Claws Animal Hospital

As Mike looks to add more products to his line (to help pets with various diseases,) I will be able to help formulate the best supplements available. Here is how to use the Vim & Vigor formula for your pet.

1. There is an AM formula (to be given each morning) and a PM formula (to be given at night before bedtime.) Twice daily dosing is needed to maintain a constant blood level of nutrients, and the PM formula contains L-tryptophan, an amino acid which helps ensure restful sleep.

2. The dog formula is made into a tasty tablet treat; the cat formula is a tasty bacon-flavored powder. In those rare instances when your pet won't take the proper formula, you can certainly use the cat powder formula for dogs and the small dog tablet treat for cats (I actually give both products to my dog Rita and cat Dysa!)

3. Calling the Vim & Vigor formula a "multivitamin/mineral" product does not do this product justice. It contains so much more to support your pet's health than simply vitamins and minerals. Unlike ANY pet supplement on the market, it also contains: colostrum (to boost the immune system;) coenzyme Q-10 (a potent antioxidant that supports the immune system and also supports healthy teeth and gums, the heart, and is one of many supplements useful in treating cancer;) enzymes such as amylase/protease/cellulase (which improve your pet's digestion and absorption of nutrients from the diet;) glucosamine (necessary to support normal joint function;) and Siberian ginseng (which helps your pet adapt to various stressors.) If you had to give your pet all of these ingredients individually, you would be giving 15-20 pills twice daily and spending several hundred dollars each month! The Vim & Vigor formula costs anywhere from $1-$3 per day depending upon the size of your pet, making it the least expensive way to get all of these nutrients into your pet! (If you choose to become an independent pet care consultant for Pet Togethers, your pet's supplements will cost even less. You can learn more about this at their website, www.pettogethers.net/allourpets, or by asking us for a brochure (email allourpets@earthlink.net to request a brochure.)

4. When you need to refill your pet's supplement, simply go to www.pettogethers.net/allourpets and sign up for their autoship program. Your supplements will be mailed to you on schedule! By using the Vim & Vigor formula as your pet's basic supplement, you're well on your way to ensuring maximum health! Shawn Messonnier, DVM

Understanding the Integrative (Holistic) Approach to Pet Care

by Dr. Shawn Messonnier

At Paws & Claws Animal Hospital, I integrate conventional therapies (when appropriate) with complementary (alternative) therapies that may include acupuncture, magnetic therapy, homeopathy, homotoxicology, nutritional therapy, and Chinese or Western herbal therapy. When possible, our approach is to minimize conventional medications (saying" NO" to drugs) when appropriate. While each pet is different, the following general approach will apply to most pets.

1. Diet - Feeding the proper diet is the foundation upon which any integrative pet care program begins. Simply put, your pet is what he/she eats. Minimizing harmful byproducts and chemicals is essential. We encourage you to try either of the natural diets we offer at Paws & Claws, either Nature's Variety or Eagle Pack. Alternatively, you may wish to cook for your pet, and we can provide a recipe upon your request. If you live too far away to purchase one of our premium natural diets, you can also try to locate one of the following diets closer to home: California Natural, Innova, Wysong, Old Mother Hubbard, Halo, or contact your Flint River Ranch distibutor by phone (805-569-0791) or on the Internet.

2. Minimize vaccines - We recommend an annual blood antibody test called a titer test to determine if and when your pet might need vaccinations. If the titer is low, your pet might need a vaccine; if the titer is normal, no vaccine is needed. Rabies vaccination is a different case and vaccination schedules are based upon state law in consideration of your pet's health.

3. Minimize toxins - While oral monthly heartworm preventive medication is important (we have not found any proven natural preventives) most pets do NOT need annual chemical flea and tick control (Frontline, Advantage, Advantix, Revolution, Program, etc.) We will discuss your pet's need for parasite control and prefer natural therapies (using the chemicals only for a short time) when needed.

4. Basic Vitamin/Mineral Supplement - The BEST product we have found is the PetCentRX brand called Vim & Vigor Formula made by Pet Togethers (www.pettogethers.net/allourpets ) In addition to the vitamins and minerals your pet requires, it contains colostrum (to support the immune system,) coenzyme Q-10 (a potent antioxidant that also supports the immune system and supports healthy teeth and gums, the heart, and is one of many supplements useful in treating cancer,) enzymes such as amylase/protease/cellulase that improve your pet's digestion and absorption of nutrients from the diet, glucosamine (necessary to support normal joint function,) Siberian ginseng (which helps your pet adapt to various stressors,) and L-tryptophan (an amino acid included in the PM formula which helps ensure restful sleep.) The Vim & Vigor formula is our basic supplement for most pets; other therapies are added on top of this depending upon your pet's needs.
