Chiropractor to the Rescue for your Cat or Dog

Over the years I have taken several of my pets to my own chiropractor for a spinal adjustment. Just like humans, animals can experience injuries to the spine causing one or more subluxations (vertebrae out of alignment). Such a misalignment can cause pain in movement and at times even an inability to move. While veterinary chiropractic is a rapidly growing specialty some of us are fortunate to have a working relationship with a human chiropractor who is willing to examine and adjust our furry friends also.

In the case of my 13-year old golden retriever who used to participate in obedience (requiring jumping hurdles) several small adjustments have made her run with much greater ease (she no longer favors one side).

In the case of a cat who became completely immobilized due to injury - it made the difference between spending the rest of his life in a box or walking again with only a minor crook in a front paw. It was amazing to witness a cat - first lying inert and inanimate on the adjusting table - then get up and climb down off the table after just two adjustments. This cat "Spice" went on to live four more happy years until he was fourteen.

Glucosamine for a Dog's Joints

Does your dog seem surprisingly inactive? Is your dog constantly reluctant to lie down or get up? Do you hear a "clicking" noise when he is walking? Or is there any change in your dog's behavior that seems to indicate pain? If so, your pet may be one of many that suffer from arthritis.

As many people know supplementing a dog's diet with Glucosamine Sulphite and Chondroitin Sulphate can prevent the cartilege deterioration that become so painful in the dog's senior years. A quality food such as the Flint River Ranch Senior Plus contains both these supplements and is appropriate for older dogs. A treat that dogs love, also from Flint River Ranch, is Jubilee Wafers, which contain both these natural ingredients as well.

Recognizing the symptoms that suggest arthritis is very important, since a true dog lover wants to understand why his or her dog is sick and unhappy. As with human arthritis the causes may be any of the following: previous injuries, repeated excessive exercise, genetics, infection, or difficulties with the immune system. As with people, once dogs become quite old, arthritis can be expected, and minimal stiffness usually requires no treatment. Only your veterinarian can diagnose and treat arthritis in its more advanced or debilitating states.

All Our Pets - in conjunction with our other site All Be Fit - now offers Fruit Bars for people that make excellent occasional treats for dogs also. They contain no artificial coloring or flavoring and 26 natural ingredients. Find out about Fruit Pulse Bars from the Brain Garden that everyone is talking about now.

The Importance of Supplements

Q: Dear Dr. Shawn:"After reading The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats, I know that you're a big believer in using supplements in pets. However, since I feed my dog what I think is a really good natural diet, is supplementation still important? Is there anything in particular you would recommend?"

A: "Like you, I'm a big believer in feeding the proper diet AND combining the best diet with whatever supplements your pet requires. I'm assuming for this discussion that your pet is healthy and does not have any specific needs that I should address. The foundation of any holistic health program starts with a good, natural diet, preferably one free from byproducts and chemicals. However, even the best diets may not provide everything your pet needs to maintain health. This is because diets are formulated for the "average" pet, and I've yet to see any "average" pet. There is a lot of evidence that support the benefits of vitamin and mineral supplementation for all diets. This is especially true for pet foods that are not natural and holistic such as the one you've chosen to feed; many foods are lacking nutritional enhancement and the ingredients used are byproducts from human grade materials that are not fit for human consumption and are deficient in many important nutrients. The diet is a starting place, and supplements are used depending upon each pet's specific needs. Having said this, I think I can make some general recommendations regarding supplements that will be true for all pets.

The supplement should be scientifically formulated and sound, and not just contain some ingredients quickly thrown together. Second, the supplement (like your pet's diet) should be formulated with the finest all natural human grade ingredients available. Third, they should be economical in order to allow you to supplement your pet's diet and ensure that he is getting all the essential nutrients he needs everyday. A little bit of money spend maintaining health is better than spending a whole lot of money to treat illness! Finally, the supplement should be easy to give to your pet; using a supplement as a treat is better than having to force yet another pill down your pet. There are many good supplements your doctor might recommend; one of my favorites is called Vim and Vigor by PetCentrx (www.pettogethers.net/allourpets.) I believe that by using high quality supplements, along with the great diet you're already feeding, that you are doing your best to ensure your pet's health and minimize disease."
