The Kerry Blue TerrierThe Kerry Blue Terrier, the national dog of Ireland. |
![]() |
Originating in County Kerry,
Ireland in the 1700's for badger, fox, and rat hunting, the Kerry Blue
is by government decree the national dog of Ireland. Today it is kept
frequently as a companion, but it is also an excellent watchdog, ratter,
and water retriever, and even successful as a herding dog. Its nonshedding
topcoat and absence of undercoat make it The Kerry Blue Terrier is one of the larger terrier breeds, having a weight range of 33 to 37 pounds and a height range of eighteen to nineteen inches. Its life expectancy is about 14 years. Shown above, courtesy of the Westminster Kennel Club, is Ch. Torum's Scarf Michael, owned by English breeder Ron Ramsey. Best in show winner in England's 2000 Crufts show, Mick attained his American championship in only three shows, taking BIS in all three, an almost unheard of achievement. This same dog recently garnered another gold in the Eukanueba invitational show held in December in Orlando, Florida and just broadcast on Animal Planet TV channel. This was truly a prestigious award for a remarkable dog. And now a Triple Crown winner as Mick took BIS at Westminster on February 11th! This is perhaps the first time in all show history that a single dog has won BIS in all these shows. Truly amazing. |
